In 2002, Souby renewed his studies in creative writing under Bay Area poet and fiction author James Tipton. He has published two novels and.an anthology of short stories and recently graduated with an MA in writing from Johns Hopkins University.
He is is a graduate of the Upright Citizen's Brigade in Los Angeles and BATS Improv in San Francisco where he learned narrative style improv and later studied with its pioneer, Keith Johnstone in Calgary, Alberta.
Souby is currently seeking representation for his third novel Heavens Door while finishing up a sci-fi epic tentatively titled "Beyond the Realm of Black and White." He is a fan of an eclectic array of literature including poetry, literary fiction, satire and science fiction. His favorite authors include Denis Johnson, Mary Oliver, Tim O'Brien, Raymond Carver, Jericho Brown, Kurt Vonnegut, Cixin Liu and Gregory David Roberts
Charles Souby was born and raised on the Chicago North Shore. In the fall of 1975 he moved to San Francisco, where he graduated with a BA in English Literature from San Francisco State University.
The ensuing fifteen years found him struggling in Alaska and California, living close to the curb. and spending the late 80's and early 90's as a San Francisco cab driver and street musician. In 1999, relieved of his demons ,he moved to Marin County, where he began to pursue his dream in the literary arts.
He has recently completed the graduate writing program at Johns Hopkins University
A mureed in the Inayati Sufi Order for over twenty years, souby is also a student of Advaita (non-dual) spiritual philosophy.
He presently resides on the Hawaiian Islands.
