About The Author

Biographical Notes

Charles Souby, who has recently completed the graduate writing program at Johns Hopkins University, was born and raised on the Chicago North Shore. In the fall of 1975 he moved to San Francisco, where he graduated with a BA in English Literature from San Francisco State University.

The ensuing fifteen years found him struggling in Alaska and California, living close to the curb and spending the late '80s and early '90s as a San Francisco cab driver and street musician. In 1999—relieved of his demons—he moved to Marin County, where he began to pursue his dream in the literary arts.

A mureed in the Inayati Sufi Order for over twenty years, Souby is also a student of Advaita (non-dual) spiritual philosophy.

He presently resides on the Hawaiian Islands.

Writing Background

In 2002, Charles Souby began studying creative writing under Bay Area poet and novelist James Tipton. He has since published two novels and a short story collection, and recently earned his MA in Writing from Johns Hopkins University.

He is also a graduate of the Upright Citizens Brigade in Los Angeles and BATS Improv in San Francisco, where he trained in narrative-style improvisation. He later studied with its pioneer, Keith Johnstone, in Calgary, Alberta.

Souby is currently seeking representation for his third novel, Heaven’s Door, and has completed a science fiction epic titled Beyond the Realm of Black and White. His literary tastes span poetry, literary fiction, satire, and speculative fiction. Favorite authors include Denis Johnson, Amor Towles, Mary Oliver, Tim O'Brien, Arthur C. Clarke, Jericho Brown, Cixin Liu, Kurt Vonnegut, and Gregory David Roberts.
